Safeguarding means protecting children from harm, supporting their mental and physical wellbeing and ensuring a safe environment for them to grow and learn. It includes safety in school, on trips, when working online, safe recruitment and visitor checks. Safeguarding pupils includes in school, at home and influences in the wider community such as peer relationships and online interactions. Child Protection refers to action taken when a child is suffering, or is at risk of, significant harm.

All staff are required to wear an appropriately coloured ID lanyard whilst on the school premises. Visitors during the day are required to sign in and wear the visitor’s lanyard issued to them on arrival. All staff receive regular training throughout the year.
Our Safeguarding Team complete Level 3 ‘Safeguarding Training for Designated Staff’;
renewed every two years.
Annual in-house safeguarding training is provided for all NIA Smash staff.
Annual Safeguarding and Child Protection online training is provided for all staff working directly with pupils.

There is a dedicated school counsellor who supports students’ emotional, social, and mental wellbeing. They provide individual and group counselling and help students manage challenges. The school counsellor plays a key role in safeguarding and child protection. They work closely with staff and parents to support positive behaviour and learning and they promote a healthy, inclusive, whole-school wellbeing culture. The school counsellor is available for both staff and parents to speak to regarding individual pupils.
The school nursing team lead and deliver the Healthy Child Programme for school-aged children and young people. The team works in partnership with children and their families to address health needs and to promote health and wellbeing with a focus on early help and support. The nurses provide a variety of services such as health promotion/education, delivering training to staff and pupils within the schools and carrying out developmental screening. Each school nurse is supported by their team to promote health and emotional wellbeing within school.
