At Newton International Academy Barwa, Character Education is not simply a subject or programme – it is embedded in the culture and everyday life of our school. Our aim is to enable every student to flourish by developing the moral, civic, intellectual and performance virtues needed to make wise choices, build positive relationships, contribute to the common good and lead meaningful lives. We believe that education goes beyond academic achievement. We seek to develop compassionate, responsible, reflective and resilient young people who understand that their choices and actions can make a positive difference to others, their community and the wider world.

Our Approach: Caught, Taught and Sought
Character Education at NIA Barwa follows a whole-school Caught, Taught and Sought approach.
Caught – Character is modelled through our school culture, relationships, routines and the examples set by adults and students.
Taught – Character is explicitly taught through assemblies, PSHE, P4C, curriculum learning, stories, discussion and reflection.
Sought – Students are given opportunities to practise character for themselves through leadership, service, reflection, social action and everyday choices. Through this approach, students learn that character is not simply something we talk about – it is something we develop through practice, reflection and repeated choices.
Our Virtues Our Character Education programme develops four interconnected areas of virtue:
Moral Virtues help us do what is right and treat others well, including kindness, caring, helpfulness, forgiveness, courtesy, respect and fairness.
Civic Virtues develop active citizenship and responsibility towards others, our community and the environment, including cooperation, gratitude, friendliness and social responsibility.
Performance Virtues develop the habits needed to persevere and strive for excellence, including courage, determination, self-discipline and patience.
Intellectual Virtues support learning, thinking, enquiry and reflection, including curiosity, reasoning and thoughtful reflection. A shared weekly virtue provides a whole-school focus and is explored through assemblies, classroom discussion, curriculum connections, reflection and home learning.

Developing Wise Choices
Character Education is about more than knowing the meaning of a virtue. We want students to develop the practical wisdom to recognise which virtues are needed in different situations and to make thoughtful, balanced choices. Through age-appropriate stories, scenarios, discussion, P4C and reflection, students consider questions such as: What is the right thing to do? Which virtues do I need here? How might my choice affect others? As students mature, they are encouraged to think more deeply about situations where different virtues may need to be balanced and to explain the reasoning behind their choices.
Character Across the Curriculum
Character Education extends beyond assemblies and PSHE. Teachers and subject leaders identify authentic opportunities to develop character through learning across the curriculum, as well as through trips, ECAs, themed weeks and wider school experiences. Students are encouraged to recognise how different areas of learning develop particular virtues and how these can be applied beyond the classroom.
Reflection, Relationships and Behaviour
Character is developed through everyday choices. Our restorative approach encourages students to reflect on their actions, understand how their choices affect others and consider which virtues can help them make better choices in the future. We celebrate students who demonstrate positive character while also developing intrinsic motivation – helping children understand the importance of doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do, not simply because they will receive recognition or reward.
Student Leadership, Service and Social Responsibility
Student leadership provides meaningful opportunities to put character into action. Through our Student Council, Eco-Team, House Captains, Ambassadors, Prefects, Bus Monitors and Little Leaders, students take responsibility, serve others and contribute to school and community life. Students participate in social action, sustainability initiatives, campaigns, buddying and school improvement projects. They are encouraged to reflect not only on what they did, but also why they did it, who benefited, which virtues they developed and what difference their actions made. This supports our commitment to developing responsible young people who understand their role in contributing to the common good.
Character and Sustainability
Through our Eco-Schools work, students learn that caring for the environment is an expression of character and social responsibility. Recycling, environmental campaigns, clean-ups, plastic reduction and other student-led initiatives provide opportunities for students to practise cooperation, responsibility, respect and leadership while making a tangible difference to their environment.
Working in Partnership with Families
Character development is most powerful when school and home work together. Our Character Education Home Journals, Parent Handbook, workshops and regular communication help families understand our approach and provide opportunities to discuss and practise virtues at home. Parents are encouraged to celebrate character in everyday life and talk with their children about the choices, relationships and actions through which good character develops.
Character in Action
Character Education comes alive throughout the school year through assemblies, curriculum learning, student leadership, community initiatives and events such as Anti-Bullying Week, Kindness activities and Plastic-Free Week. These experiences provide opportunities for students to move beyond simply knowing about virtues to understanding, applying and reflecting upon them independently.

Our ambition is for students to leave NIA Barwa as confident, kind, reflective and principled young people who have the character and practical wisdom to make positive choices, serve others and contribute meaningfully to their communities. We want every student to understand that their character is continually developing – through the choices they make, the relationships they build and the actions they take.
