Private Peaceful is an excellent piece of literature and can be enjoyed by young and older people alike.
I enjoyed the book because it is cleverly written and absorbs the reader from the very first page, the book is emotive and historically accurate, it is a compelling read for these reasons and has been awarded various accolades.
The novel is set just before the start of World War One and leads from the tranquil life Thomas Peaceful once enjoyed in the English countryside to fighting in France. Once in France on the Western Front, Thomas experiences the most devastating experiences such as pain, grief and the death of his fellow friends. Although a work of fiction the book is heavily set in the realities of what life was like at that time for young men who were expected to fight in the war.
I would recommend any child from Year 6 with an interest in literature or history to read this book.
